The Pitsco Solar Oven Kit provides students in grades 6-12 a hands-on activity to build a solar oven that demonstrates the scientific concepts of solar energy, heat gain, heat loss, and the second law of thermodynamics, and it includes materials to build a solar oven using scissors, glue, and tape. The solar oven kit contains 11 x 17-inch sheets of reflective material, an 11 x 17-inch sheet of cellophane, a 12 x 18-inch sheet of foam for insulation, a 10 x 12-inch sheet of black aluminum foil with an imprinted pattern, a 3 x 6-inch basswood strip, and instructions. Once built, the oven can prepare snacks such as s'mores, nachos, and other treats, allowing students to experiment with solar energy and the geometry between the earth and the sun. The project reinforces engineering, technology, and math concepts as students build and test an efficient solar oven. Finished measurements are 6 x 13-1/4 x 10-1/2 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) A solar oven kit is typically used in an educational setting to demonstrate solar energy and thermodynamics.
Construction requires scissors or hobby knife, glue sticks, ruler, and transparent tape (all sold separately).
Science education products incorporate applied math and science principles into classroom projects. Teachers in pre-K, elementary, and secondary classrooms use science education kits and products alongside science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum to demonstrate STEM concepts and real-world applications through hands-on activities. Science education projects include a broad range of activities, such as practical experiments in engineering, aeronautics, robotics, energy, chemistry, physics, biology, and geology.
Pitsco Education develops K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum, educational kits, and classroom tools. The company, founded in 1971, is headquartered in Pittsburg, KS.
